Timeline for Course Requirement Completion

Students are strongly encouraged to complete an RCR course for doctoral students within the first 12 months of their doctoral program, unless the "in-house" RCR course required by their home academic unit is not offered during the first year of the student's doctoral program. In general, students who need to take PHIL 6000 are encouraged to do so during the first summer session after they begin their doctoral program at Georgia Tech.

Important Notes About In-Person RCR Training for Doctoral Students

  • Students who are funded by a covered NSF or NIH grant must complete the in-person training within one year of appointment to the project. The exception to this rule is if their doctoral program's required in-person RCR course is offered during the second year of the program.
  • For information about which graduate programs have an "in-house" RCR course for doctoral students, refer to rcr.gatech.edu/doctoral-courses.
  • To verify the status of RCR degree requirements, students and and their advisors may refer to DegreeWorks. (Courses will not show up in DegreeWorks until several days after grades are in for the semester.)
  • If the Georgia Tech RCR Academic Policy for Doctoral Students imposes a hardship on a doctoral student who was originally admitted prior to Fall 2011 but now has a more recent catalog year, the student may petition the RCR Program to review the case. For more information on this process, refer to this Policy's FAQs.
  • Doctoral students who have a catalog year prior to 2011-12 are not required by the Georgia Tech RCR Academic Policy for Doctoral Students to complete RCR training but they should refer to the applicability criteria listed in the Georgia Tech RCR Compliance Policy to determine if their source of funding requires the training.
